Chihana: Awesome Kaiseki in Gion, Kyoto With 65 Years of History!

Located in Gion, Kyoto, 'Chihana' is a kaiseki (Japanese haute cuisine) restaurant that first opened in 1954. Gion is one of the most iconic districts of Kyoto, and high-end kaiseki such as that served at Chihana is the perfect meal to complete a visit to the historical neighborhood.

Why Go?

Chihana is a cozy restaurant with just 8 counter seats and one table for 4. Dining here is almost similar to dining at a high-end sushi restaurant, except that the dishes in the fabulous course meals aren't limited to seafood. The food is kaiseki cuisine, meaning wonderfully fresh, seasonal ingredients are used to make the very best dishes for that day.

Each dish is beautiful and delicately prepared, showcasing the wonderful flavors of Kyoto including fresh vegetables, white fish, sashimi, tofu, and more. Many of the dishes take more than a day of prep time and are simply incredible. It's a grand meal that is bound to put a smile on your face!


At dinnertime, two courses are available, one for ¥21,600, and the other for ¥32,400. At lunchtime, a third course is also available for ¥10,000, which is a great option for those wanting to experience great kaiseki without spending too much money.

Access / Reservations

Chihana is located 5 minutes away from Sanjo Station, or 6 minutes away from Gion Shijo Station. From Kyoto Station, a taxi ride is about 15 minutes.

Reservations are required and should be made at least one month in advance, if possible. See the link below for assistance with reserving if you don't speak Japanese.

Note that children under the age of 10 are not allowed in the restaurant, so plan ahead in case you are travelling with kids.
